Did You Know: How the Elements Affect Us?


As I progress with my Hatha YTT course, it gets interesting to learn more of the spiritual connections with our mind, body and soul. This one is about the five elements of life.


The five elements make up the universe and everything is made of these elements, they only differ in composition.


So, how does these elements affect us? Let’s understand this further.


  1. Body - earth element: This is the physical being of ourselves; the element we experience life in. Without a body, our existence wouldn’t be known.

  2. Mind - water element: This keeps our flow of thoughts going which makes our life meaningful. You would only be an empty body without a mind. The body may be present as the mind wanders. Like the flow of water never stops, right? Finding balance with our body and the mind is of foremost importance so they do not go out of balance. Practices like meditation or mantras can help balance the flow of thoughts.

  3. Intelligence - fire element: This is the spark in the mind that gives thought direction or energy. Unless the mind has a spark, it will flow in no particular direction. Like we all say, anything flowing directionless is not meaningful. We need to set an intension for our goals, for our ideas, for our actions which ultimately defines our purpose of life.

  4. Awareness - air element: Air gives a sensation of something happening around us which is very essential in our existence. After we become aware of the environment around us, the intelligence of the mind can run in a certain direction for the body to run well. Like we say, awareness is key.

  5. Consciousness - space element: it is present everywhere; it’s the experiencer of life. Without consciousness, you wouldn’t know you had a body or mind; no awareness or intelligence could be generated


All elements are related. None can be separated in this universe. Caring for all is caring for us.
