Ayurvedic Knowledge: The ‘Vata’ Dosha

In my next chapter of Hatha YTT course, I learn about Ayurveda as a topic. Ayurveda means science of life and originates in India more than 5,000 years ago. Often called the ‘Mother of healing’ it it composed of five elements: Air (Vayu), Water (Jala), Space (Aakash), Earth (Prithvi), Fire (Teja). These elements are believed to form the three basics doshas of the human body in varying combinations.


The three doshas are Vata Dosha, Pitta Dosha and Kapha Dosha and they basically control the physiological functions.


Let’s learn about Vata and how you can balance it.


Vata is the subtle energy of movement, composed Space and Air. It governs breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movement, pulsation of the heart. Routine is very useful is assisting the vata individual to effectively ground all this moving energy.


When Vata is out of balance, it can produce fear and anxiety. Here’s a general guidelines for balancing your vata:


  1. Keep warm

  2. Keep calm

  3. Avoid cold, frozen or raw foods

  4. Avoid extreme cold

  5. Eat warm food and spices

  6. Keep a regular routine

  7. Get plenty of rest
